About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

image003The Best of
The Upper East Side

With the construction of Central Park in the second half of the 19th century, the Upper East Side became—and remains—the most fashionable New York City neighborhood. During the Gilded Age, Fifth Avenue became New York’s gold coast, and the streets are lined with former mansions, prestigious boutiques, private clubs, and—along “Millionaire’s Mile”—some of the city's grandest apartment buildings Planned stops include *:

  • Grand Army Plaza and the Plaza Hotel
  • Fifth, Madison, and Park Avenues
  • The Metropolitan Club
  • The Knickerbocker Club
  • The Central Park Arsenal
  • Temple Emanu-El
  • The Joseph Pulitzer Mansion
  • The Seventh Regiment Armory
  • Hunter College
  • The Whitney Museum
  • The Hotel Carlyle
  • The Frick Collection
  • The Duke Mansion (NYU's Institute of Fine Art)
  • Mayor Mike Bloomberg's Mansion
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with historic photographs to show the beautiful mansions that are now gone and to get a glimpse inside some of those that remain.

Please note that this tour does not include stops in the museums, but participants are welcome to explore any of them before or after the tour.
